Carmen’s Boudoir Story: A Real Detroit Client Experience

Carmen wasn’t sure what she wanted out of her boudoir session when she booked it. She just knew she needed something.

“I wasn’t entirely sure what my vision was going into my shoot outside of getting out of my comfort zone.”

A lot of women come in that way. They don’t have a Pinterest board, they don’t have a goal weight they’re trying to hit first, they don’t have a clear vision for what the photos are even supposed to look like. They just know something has to shift, and they don’t know what that shift is going to look like until it’s already happening.

The session was originally supposed to be a gift for someone else.

“Initially I planned it as a gift, but realized I mentally needed it for me and all the chaos going on in my life.”

That’s a moment I see happen with a lot of women. They book the session thinking it’s for a partner or for an anniversary or for some milestone someone else is involved in, and somewhere between the inquiry and the studio door, they realize it was always for them. The gift framing was just the permission slip they needed to give themselves to actually do it.

Carmen gave herself that permission, and she came in.

What the day actually felt like

A lot of women walk into their first boudoir session braced for a performance. They expect to be told to arch their back, suck in their stomach, pretend to feel sexy on command. That isn’t what happens here.

“Magan makes things so chill! It gives the vibes of that best friend you can pick up with wherever you left off even if you haven’t spoke in months! The whole thing is just relaxing and inviting to just be yourself.”

That’s the part most women don’t believe until they’re inside it. That a boudoir session can feel like sitting on the couch with a friend, except someone’s doing your hair and makeup, and somewhere along the way the camera comes out and you’ve already forgotten to be self-conscious about it.

The studio is built for that. There’s privacy, there’s music, there’s enough time that nothing feels rushed, and there’s no audience. Just two people in a room, and one of them is making sure the other one feels okay.

The shift she didn’t expect

Here’s the part Carmen didn’t see coming.

“So much more comfortable in my own body. I don’t feel like I have to meet this image I’ve always had in my mind of what I wanted to be, I feel like I can just be comfortable with me.”

I want you to actually sit with what she said there.

She didn’t say the session made her feel sexier, or that it gave her some performative boost of confidence. She said she stopped trying to meet an image of herself she’d been chasing in her head, and started being comfortable as the person she actually is.

That’s the real work a boudoir session does when it lands the way it’s supposed to. It isn’t about turning you into someone new. It’s about letting you stop performing the version of yourself you’ve been carrying around for everyone else.

“I’m not afraid to be open and don’t feel like I have to hide anymore.”

What she said to women still on the fence

I asked Carmen what she’d say to a woman reading this who’s been thinking about booking a session for months and hasn’t actually done it yet.

Her answer was four words.

“Just do it. Even if you’re on the fence.”

That’s coming from someone who was that exact woman a few months earlier.

You don’t have to be sure. You don’t have to have a vision. You don’t have to wait until you’ve hit some imagined version of yourself before you’re allowed to book. Carmen didn’t wait. She booked a session not knowing what she was going to get out of it, and she walked out comfortable in her own skin and already thinking about scheduling the next one.

“So excited to see the final photos and debating on when I wanted to schedule another one!”

If something in this is calling you

If you read Carmen’s story and felt something pull a little, that’s enough of a sign.

You don’t have to know exactly what you’re looking for, and you don’t have to be at peace with your body, and you don’t have to wait for the chaos in your life to settle down first. The chaos is what most women come in with. Carmen included.

You just have to show up.
