What Is a Boudoir Session?
What is a boudoir session and is it something you could actually see yourself doing?
That’s the question most women are quietly asking when they start searching. Not just the logistics. The real question underneath it: is this for someone like me?
The answer is yes. Here’s everything you actually need to know.
The Simple Answer
A boudoir session is a professional photography experience designed to capture you; your body, your energy, your presence in a way that’s intimate, intentional, and entirely on your terms.
It’s not about looking a certain way. It’s not about performing confidence you don’t feel yet. It’s about showing up as you are right now and leaving with images that show you something about yourself you haven’t been able to see in the mirror.
That’s it. That’s what a boudoir session is.
What Actually Happens During a Boudoir Session
At my private Ferndale studio just outside Detroit a boudoir session looks like this:
You arrive. Loose comfortable clothing, fresh face, clean dry hair. No preparation beyond that is required.
We start with hair and makeup. I’m a licensed stylist so I handle this personally — it takes about an hour and it’s designed to ease you into the experience. We talk about your vision, your vibe, what you want to feel. The camera doesn’t come out until you’re ready.
We move into the studio. I direct every single pose. Where to put your hands, how to angle your body, point your toes, arch your back, where to look, and what to do with your expression. You don’t need to know anything about posing that’s entirely my job. Most women forget they were nervous somewhere in the first 20 minutes. The whole time we’re together we have whatever your favorite kind of music that makes you feel sexy and confident playing in the background. Nothing about what we do is serious, we are laughing and it really just feels like hanging out with your long lost bestie.
We shoot through 2 to 4 outfit changes. Lingerie, a silk robe, an oversized sweater, whatever feels like you. There’s no dress code and no right answer about what boudoir has to look like.
Your session ends. Your images are delivered to a private password-protected gallery within a few days to view your proofs. You browse at home, at your own pace, and choose your favorites. I edit, and design your collection and everything is drop shipped directly to your door.
The whole experience — from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave — takes about 3 to 4 hours.
What a Boudoir Session Is Not
It’s not a glamour shoot. It’s not a magazine photoshoot. It’s not about looking like someone else or performing a version of yourself you think the camera wants to see.
It’s not only for certain body types. Not only for certain ages. Not only for women in relationships or women with a specific occasion to celebrate. It’s for any woman who wants a few hours that belong entirely to her.
And it’s not a high-pressure experience. At my Detroit area studio there’s no in-person reveal where you’re making decisions while you’re still emotionally raw from the session. Your gallery comes to you. You take your time. You decide what feels right.
Who Books a Boudoir Session
Women book boudoir sessions for every reason imaginable and for no reason at all.
Some come in for a milestone — a birthday, an anniversary, a wedding morning gift. Some come in after a significant life change — a divorce, a health journey, a chapter that needed marking. Some come in because they’ve been thinking about it for years and finally decided they were done waiting.
Some come in entirely for themselves. No occasion. No gift. Just a few hours to be fully seen in a way they’ve never allowed before.
The women who book sessions at my Ferndale studio range from their early 20s to their late 60s. Every size. Every background. Every comfort level. The one thing they have in common is that something called them toward this — and they listened.
What Women Say Afterward
The thing most women say after their session isn’t about the photos. It’s about how they felt during it.
They say they forgot they were nervous. They say something shifted — somewhere between the first pose and the last they stopped performing and started actually being there. They say the images don’t look like what they expected — they look better. More real. More them.
Some say it was the most powerful thing they’ve done for themselves in years. Some say they wish they’d done it sooner. Almost all of them say they’d do it again.

Frequently Asked Questions About Boudoir Sessions
Do I need to be confident to book a boudoir session? No. Confidence is not a prerequisite — it’s often the outcome. The women who arrive most nervous are almost always the ones who leave most blown away. You don’t need to feel ready. You just need to show up.
What do I wear to a boudoir session? Whatever makes you feel like yourself. Lingerie, a silk robe, an oversized button-down, your partner’s shirt, a cozy sweater — boudoir doesn’t have a dress code. Bring 3 to 5 options and we’ll talk through them together before we start.
Is a boudoir session just for women in relationships? Not at all. Many clients book sessions entirely for themselves with no gift or occasion attached. A boudoir session is for any woman who wants a few hours that belong entirely to her — regardless of relationship status.
How is a boudoir session different from regular portrait photography? Boudoir is more intimate, more personal, and more focused on how you feel in front of the camera than on creating a technically perfect image. A great portrait photographer captures how you look. A great boudoir photographer captures how you feel — and those are very different things.
Is everything kept private? Yes completely. Nothing is ever shared publicly without your explicit written permission. Many clients keep their sessions entirely private and that is fully respected.
How do I know if a boudoir session is right for me? If you’ve been thinking about it — even once — that’s the sign. Women don’t think seriously about experiences that aren’t calling to them. The fact that you’re reading this page and asking this question is enough of an answer.
