Simple Boudoir Posing You Can Try at Home!
1. Hands up in the air
Kneel and sit back on your heels. Arch your back slightly and raise your arms gracefully above your head, channeling a ballerina’s elegance. This pose elongates the body and highlights your arms.

2. Lying down, chin up
Lie on your back and gently bring your shoulder blades together, creating a soft arch in your back. Tilt your chin up to the ceiling, part your lips slightly, and close your eyes. Imagine basking in the warmth of the sun for a relaxed and serene look.

3. On all fours
Position yourself on all fours, tilting your hips to accentuate your curves. Lower onto your forearms, place one hand in your hair, and close your eyes softly. This pose embodies strength and sensuality, with a focus on your back and hips.

4. Simple Kneeling Pose
Sit on your heels and gently hold onto your bra straps or the edge of a loose garment. This versatile pose offers endless angles for playful and elegant captures.

5. Sit and bend against the wall
Sit with your back to the wall, leaning forward slightly from the waist. Pull your shoulders back and turn your head to glance over one shoulder, or up higher if the angle allows. This pose emphasizes the neckline and adds a touch of mystery.

Every Pose Is Built for the Body in Front of Me
I don’t have a set list of poses I run through the same way for every client. What I have is an eye; for light, for angles, for what makes a specific woman in a specific moment look and feel incredible.
At my Ferndale studio just outside Detroit I’ve photographed women of every size, shape, age, and comfort level. What I’ve learned from hundreds of sessions is that the most stunning images don’t come from executing a pose perfectly. They come from finding the angle that works for you – the way the light hits your shoulder, the curve of your back in this particular position, the way your hands look when they’re relaxed rather than placed.
Every pose I guide you into is adjusted in real time. I’m watching constantly – how you’re holding your pose, where the light is falling, what your body naturally wants to do. I’ll move your chin half an inch and the whole image changes. I’ll shift your hip and suddenly everything clicks.
You don’t need to arrive knowing what works for your body. Figuring that out together is the whole point.
What to Do With Your Face During Boudoir Poses
This is the question nobody asks but everyone wonders about.
Your expression is as important as your body position. Here’s what actually works:
Soft and slightly parted lips — not a full smile, not a serious stare. Slightly parted lips create a relaxed, sensual expression that photographs consistently well across every pose.
Eyes that look away from the camera — looking slightly off-lens creates mystery and depth. Looking directly into the camera creates intensity and connection. Both are beautiful; I’ll direct you toward whichever serves the moment.
A micro-expression — think of something that makes you feel powerful, beautiful, or loved. That thought shows up on your face in a way that no technical direction can produce. I’ll ask you to think of something specific during your session at my Detroit studio and the difference it makes is remarkable.
What not to do — don’t think about your face at all during the pose. When you’re focused on your expression it becomes performative. Trust me to catch you in the moments between the thinking.
Frequently Asked Questions About Boudoir Posing
Do I need to know how to pose before my boudoir session? No. Every pose at my Ferndale Michigan studio is guided from start to finish. I show you exactly where to put your hands, how to angle your body, where to look, and what to do with your expression. You don’t need any prior experience in front of a camera — in fact most of my clients have never done anything like this before.
What if I feel awkward in front of the camera? Every single woman who has walked into my Detroit boudoir studio has felt exactly that. Awkward is the starting point not the problem. By the time we’ve done hair and makeup and gotten a few shots in something shifts. The awkwardness gives way to something that looks — and feels — completely natural.
How many poses will we do in a session? A full session at my studio typically covers 15 to 25 distinct poses across 2 to 4 outfit changes. I move through poses intuitively based on what’s working and what you’re responding to — some poses we’ll spend 10 minutes on, others we’ll try once and move on.
What poses are best for plus size bodies? Diagonal angles, side relines, and poses that create curves rather than flatten them. I photograph plus size bodies regularly at my Ferndale studio and the posing approach is specific and intentional. You’ll never be left to figure out what to do — I’ll guide everything.
What poses are most popular? The side recline, the over-the-shoulder look, and the soft gaze on the bed are consistently the poses clients love most in their final galleries. They’re flattering across every body type and they capture a range of moods from soft and romantic to bold and fierce.
Can I request specific poses I’ve seen on Instagram or Pinterest? Absolutely. Send me inspiration images before your session and I’ll incorporate what works for your body and the lighting in my studio. Not every Pinterest pose translates perfectly to every body — I’ll tell you honestly what will and won’t work and suggest alternatives that achieve the same mood.
