Boudoir has come to mean a lot of different things to many different people. For some, boudoir is a way to express their sexuality, while for others it can be an empowering experience. It is a form of self-care, self-love and body-positive expression that is often used to celebrate events such as anniversaries, birthdays and wedding gifts. It can also be used to document a milestone such as weight loss or a life transition. More so now than ever before, women are taking the time to celebrate and love their bodies. Taking the time to do a boudoir shoot is a great way to document a special moment or event.

At its core, boudoir is about being confident, feeling seen, and beautiful. While some see it as a way of getting sexy photos for a partner, for many it is about getting out of their comfort zone and embracing their inner beauty. For example, a boudoir shoot can give those battling with body image issues or insecurities the boost they need to truly love their bodies. I think what many don’t realize is that a boudoir session is an amazing experience that can ultimately help you to love the skin you’re in and realize your own beauty.

Whether you are in it for empowering yourself, celebrating an upcoming event, or simply wanting beautiful photos, a boudoir session is an experience that can have a profound impact. While it’s always important to practice safety and caution, exploring boudoir can be a positive, freeing experience that can open your eyes to the beauty that lies within.

I have no idea what to wear for a boudoir shoot, help!?

When it comes to boudoir photography, what you wear can be just as important as the photographer’s ability to capture the perfect shot. It’s natural to feel nervous when preparing for a boudoir shoot, but by considering all your options, you’ll be able to create a look that will make you feel confident and beautiful in front of the camera.

When choosing what to wear for a boudoir shoot, the first thing you’ll want to consider is your personal style. If you’re comfortable in something that makes you feel sexy, like a silky robe or a delicate lingerie set, then that’s a great option to consider. If you’re looking for more of a classic and timeless approach, consider a fitted satin blouse and trousers. Whatever look you choose, make sure it’s something you’d be happy in for years to come. If you’re looking for a less femme vibe, that is always more than acceptable. Please, whatever you do – make this you in every way possible.

If you’re feeling a little extra adventurous, you can’t go wrong with a bold, attention-grabbing color. Red is always a great choice to draw attention and make a statement. For a more subtle and classic look, black is always timeless. You can also make a statement with statement accessories, such as a statement necklace, a bold headpiece, or a pair of over-the-knee boots. Whatever you choose, make sure it makes you feel empowered and confident.

Don’t be afraid to make it uniquely you

Finally, don’t forget the little details that complete the look. Try adding some delicate jewelry or a beautiful hairpiece. Adding props like a pair of high heels, a fur coat, or a vintage fan can also help to create a unique photo-shoot style.

I have a hard time spending money on myself, and boudoir is an investment!

It’s not selfish to prioritize yourself—it’s necessary. In a world where everyone’s schedule is completely booked up and multitasking is expected, it can be hard to feel like you’re doing enough. So, take a moment to refocus: Do the shoot for yourself.

Self-care, whether it’s a hot bath after a long day or a photoshoot to document your own growth, is something we all need. As clinical psychologist, Dr. Fran Walfish explains, “Self-care involves setting and valuing your own needs and wants, rather than focusing exclusively on the needs of others.” This extends beyond physical needs such as getting enough sleep and eating healthy and also includes emotional and mental needs.

Focusing on yourself can be difficult when it feels like the world is constantly demanding more and more of your time and attention. However, it’s important to remember the value of setting aside time to do the things that make you happy. A photoshoot is a great way to do this. It can be a fun way to express yourself and, perhaps more importantly, to document your personal journey.

It’s up to you to prioritize self-care. Do the shoot—do something for yourself—and don’t feel guilty about it. Life isn’t a race, so take the time to appreciate the journey and document it along the way. You deserve it.
